Jumy Nails

History

Jumy Nails opened on November 2001, which is owned by Jumy Nguyen.  Jumy moved to North Ogden approximately 11 years ago and purchased her dream home.  She raised her three kids Tony-26, Julie-24, and Steven-18, who have all attended Weber State University.  Jumy’s youngest son Steven graduated High School in May and has been attending Weber State with early admittance.  Her daughter Julie is a Second Lieutenant for the Utah Highway Patrol and her oldest son Tony is in the Army, who recently returned home from serving a 10 month deployment.  He also works at Hill Airforce Base in computer technology.

Prior to owning Jumy Nails, Jumy’s first job in Utah was shoveling snow for $2 per hour.  She also sewed airbags for seven years in Ogden off of 12th Street.  Jumy worked hard to provide for her family and childcare became expensive working graveyard shifts in the factory.  Jumy decided to take out a loan and open Jumy Nails in 2001, so she could be with her children and no longer work graveyard shifts or pay for childcare.  Jumy started the nail salon with only three tables.  One year later she had two employees.  Jumy kids also helped in the salon, especially her daughter Julie, who was a receptionist and helped her mom improve her English.

Jumy’s Story

Jumy was born in Vietnam and moved to the United States 31 years ago when she was 21 years old.  Her father was African American and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  Her mother is Vietnamese; however, her mother could not raise her after her father died in the war.  Jumy’s mother left her on the street; Jumy was an orphan and lived at an orphanage until she was adopted at age 4.  She worked on a cow farm, so she could eat.  At age 21, the United Stated Government found Jumy and relocated her to Washington D.C. since her father died serving in Vietnam.  It was scary for Jumy to leave Vietnam and coming to the US, she was from a small village with only 20 homes where she grew up in Vietnam.  Jumy sponsored her adoptive family, so they could also move to the United States.  Jumy’s first time attending school was in D.C.  Her teacher, Kathy taught her English and how to write.

Later, Jumy and her family moved to Utah 26 years ago.

Community Involvement

Once a year every Thanksgiving Jumy thanks her customers by making her traditional egg rolls and sells them to her customers for half price.  Jumy’s adoptive mother taught her how to make egg rolls.  Jumy’s egg roll recipe is her own recipe with a unique flavor.  Jumy’s daughter Julie used to help her make 600-800 egg rolls and deliver them to her customers.  Last year, Jumy made 400-500 egg rolls without her daughter’s assistance.  Jumy donates the profits from the egg roll sales to her local Buddhist Temple.

Additional Information

Jumy’s has a philosophy of working hard, providing for her children, education (all her kids attending college), and has a “No Excuses” policy.  She does not believe in the “I Can’t” attitude.  Jumy plans on working until she is 85 years old and when she retires, she wants to go on a Hawaiian Cruise.

Jumy has very loyal and longtime customers.  Some of her clients travel from Syracuse and Farmington just to see Jumy and to have her do their nails.  Carol, originally from South Africa, has been a client of Jumy’s for 13 years and currently lives in Farmington.  Carol loves the friendly and family orientated environment at Jumy Nails and says Jumy’s daughter Julie is like another daughter to her.  Carol enjoys visiting with Jumy and often brings her daughter with her to get their nails done.  She has even brought her grandson and husband with her on an occasion.  Jumy’s has atmosphere which you don’t find at very many places.  Jumy feels her passion, quality, honesty, relationships, working “by her heart”, friendliness, and being personable with her customers sets her apart.

Jumy is grateful for Buddha for blessing her life.  Jumy has an amazing story and is living the American Dream.
